Advancing the performance of hill and maternal flocks in Wales with genetic improvement
The aim of this work is to support breeders to improve productivity, efficiency, and environmental performance, whilst also enabling them to make informed, evidence-based breeding decisions.
HCC is pleased to be delivering Phase 2 of Welsh Sheep Genetics (WSG) on behalf of the Welsh Government. This phase supports the uptake of genetic improvement within sheep flocks in Wales. It will deliver transition support for existing participants while opening the programme to new flocks.
A unique dataset was developed as part of the Hill Ram Scheme (previously delivered by HCC) and Phase 1 of the WSGP (previously delivered by Farming Connect) and will be built upon further during Phase 2.
Robust key performance indicators, tailored farm-level action planning, and a portfolio of research projects designed to drive innovation across the sector will also be developed.
The new genetic data gathered will strengthen industry benchmarking and support long-term business planning, strengthening the supply, presentation, and marketing capability of breeder flocks.
Interested in joining?
As of 1 July 2026, HCC is inviting interested farmers to express their interest in joining the scheme for the next three years.
They will benefit from practical, technical, and financial assistance to harness the benefits of long-term genetic gains.
