Welsh Lamb was served to a hand-picked party of Italian retailers, distributors, processors and the British Consul General Kassim Ramji, at a private dinner in Italy last week to coincide with the TuttoFood Milan trade show.
The lamb was skillfully prepared by Michelin Star Carlo Cracco at his restaurant in Milan, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. He created two dishes, rigatoni with smoked butter and PGI Welsh Lamb white ragu, and PGI Welsh Lamb wellington.
HCC’s representatives in Italy, Anna Garbagna and Sara Castelnuovo said: “The meeting was aimed at introducing Welsh Lamb to a number of top meat-industry players who could potentially become new clients, further broadening the Italian market for Welsh Lamb, where the product is already widely appreciated.”
Jason Craig, HCC’s Market Development Manager, attended the dinner and delivered a speech on the qualities of Welsh Lamb and how it’s produced. He said: “Italy is our largest market outside of the UK for branded Welsh Lamb and is vitally important to Welsh red meat processors.
“Welsh Lamb was one of the first Welsh products to receive PGI status more than twenty years ago and like Italy’s DOP and PGI products, this certification protects its origin, tradition and integrity. The Italians respect the simplicity and quality of the product, one that is a true food icon rooted in place.
“With Italy renowned as one of the world’s greatest culinary nations, I was immensely proud to experience the shared enjoyment for Welsh Lamb during the dinner.”
