Welsh Government has announced the membership of the Expert Working Group that will help shape the National Food Strategy for Wales. Among those appointed is a representative from HCC, helping to bring the perspectives of the Welsh red meat industry to discussions as the group works to identify priorities and practical actions that support a resilient, sustainable and successful food system for Wales.
The group, chaired by Simon Wright, owner of Wright's Food Emporium, will be built around four pillars: health and wellbeing; food security; economy and rural development; and environment. Together, the ambition is, that these will guide a whole-system approach to food policy in Wales, from producer to plate; retail, health, education, public procurement and the circular economy.
The ‘security of the Welsh meat supply chain’ has been identified as one indicative initial area of focus. These ‘deep dives’ aim to contribute substantively to delivery against agreed outputs and outcomes, including by:
- Analysing where and how a particular policy question or challenge interacts, impacts upon and/or is impacted by the four pillars of health and wellbeing, food security, economy and rural development and environment
- Evaluating trade-offs and explicitly identifying systemic conflicts, as well as ways to navigate or overcome tensions between different policy aims
- Identifying early or immediately actionable and low-cost policy or operational changes. These must deliver quick wins for Wales while laying the groundwork for the long-term strategy
