{"id":6247,"date":"2026-03-19T13:51:13","date_gmt":"2026-03-19T13:51:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/meatpromotion.wales\/?p=6247"},"modified":"2026-03-19T13:51:13","modified_gmt":"2026-03-19T13:51:13","slug":"3-million-secured-to-continue-welsh-sheep-genetics-programme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/meatpromotion.wales\/en\/newsroom\/3-million-secured-to-continue-welsh-sheep-genetics-programme\/","title":{"rendered":"\u00a33 Million Secured to Continue Welsh Sheep Genetics Programme"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Welsh Government has confirmed \u00a33\u00a0million\u00a0of funding over the next three\u00a0financial years\u00a0to continue the Welsh Sheep Genetics Programme (WSGP), supporting Welsh sheep farmers to improve efficiency,\u00a0productivity\u00a0and environmental performance.<\/p>\n<p>From April 2026, Hybu Cig Cymru \u2013 Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) will take the lead on Phase 2 of the programme, marking a significant step forward in supporting Welsh sheep farmers to make smarter, evidence-based breeding decisions.<\/p>\n<p>The new phase will deliver transition support for existing participants while opening the programme to new flocks. Farmers will\u00a0benefit\u00a0from practical,\u00a0technical\u00a0and financial\u00a0assistance\u00a0to harness the power of Genomic Estimated Breeding Values \u2014\u00a0cutting-edge\u00a0genetic tools that enable more informed decisions at farm level. The genetic data gathered will strengthen industry benchmarking and support long-term business planning.<\/p>\n<p>Phase 2 will also see the development of robust key performance indicators, tailored farm-level action planning, and an ambitious portfolio of research projects designed to drive innovation across the sector.<\/p>\n<p>The programme&#8217;s\u00a0objectives\u00a0are closely aligned with the Sustainable Farming Scheme, which launched on 1 January 2026, and with HCC&#8217;s Vision 2030 \u2014 underscoring a shared commitment to a productive,\u00a0sustainable\u00a0and competitive Welsh red meat industry.<\/p>\n<p>Phase 1 of the WSGP, delivered by Farming Connect,\u00a0comes to an end\u00a0on 31 March 2026. Since its launch in 2023, the programme has delivered\u00a0significant progress, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Introducing genomics into the sheep sector for the first time anywhere in the world.<\/li>\n<li>Generating the highest number of genotypes on the AHDB\u2011Signet database\u201470,000 across Tier 1 and Tier 2 flocks since 2023.<\/li>\n<li>Developing two cutting\u2011edge research strands: breeding for worm resistance and breeding for reduced methane emissions.<\/li>\n<li>Working in close partnership with leading specialists, including Innovis and AHDB\u2011Signet.<\/li>\n<li>Driving measurable genetic gains and improvements in key performance traits across participating flocks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This investment underpins the Welsh Government\u2019s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions while supporting the production of high\u2011quality, sustainable PGI Welsh Lamb.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy First Minister for Climate Change and Rural Affairs, Huw\u00a0Irranca\u2011Davies, said:\u00a0\u201cThis funding\u00a0demonstrates\u00a0our commitment to supporting farmers to build profitable, resilient businesses while delivering on our climate ambitions. The Welsh Sheep Genetics Programme shows what is possible when cutting\u2011edge science meets the proud tradition of Welsh livestock farming.
