The latest advice on animal health, HCC’s farmer intention survey and wider red meat matters were top of the conversation when Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) representatives joined the NSA Wales and Border Ram sale in Builth Wells at the start of this week. Representing HCC on the day were Industry Strategic Planning Officer Grace Bolton and Research and Development and Sustainability Executive Dr. Heather McCalman.

Those visiting the HCC stand heard the latest regarding Bluetongue advice for the industry including that as BTV-3 is spreading quickly across Europe, there remains a risk when importing animals from countries close to where disease is present. However, staff were clear that whilst no current cases have been identified in Wales, vigilance remains key. HCC also encouraged those attending the sale to participate in the farmer intention survey, so that the organisation can assess the current challenges and intentions of producers and how they’re likely to impact the future.

Commenting on the day, Grace Bolton said: “It was good to catch up with our levy payers and discuss the most pertinent red meat matters including trade and prices. The industry continues to face challenges and we’re here to help in navigating some of those storms. I hope many more farmers can fill out the survey to help us make data driven decisions and continue to accurately represent the industry, as well as to prepare and produce forecasts for the year ahead on stocking levels and the availability of red meat for consumers.”
