A good Research and Development (R&D) infrastructure enables the red meat industry in Wales to have the latest technical and strategic production pointers to fuel future growth.

In addition, HCC energetically seeks to develop profitable and sustainable worldwide markets for Welsh red meat for the benefit of all stakeholders in the supply chain. This work is supported by evidential mission statements that underpin all our product’s credentials and so R&D becomes a core activity to the provision of these wider endorsements.

HCC produces research where specific to Wales work is required and, maximises resources in instances of wider research activity by partnering with AHDB (Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board), QMS (Quality Meat Scotland), LMC (Livestock and Meat Commission for Northern Ireland), Agrisearch and others.

HCC’s R&D strategy outlines the objectives for R&D in the red meat industry, and the main areas of research include:

  • Soils and grassland management
  • Agricultural environment
  • Antibiotic use and resistance
  • Animal health and welfare
  • Livestock nutrition
  • Genetic improvement
  • Supporting processing innovation, and
  • Product integrity.
