Responding to the report’s publication, a HCC spokesperson said:
“We welcome the Senedd committee’s work in this area and the publication of ‘Bring home the harvest: supporting the Welsh food processing industry’. In particular, the recommendation which seeks to look at how Welsh Government and wider stakeholders can support Welsh abattoirs and food producers to ensure relatively low carbon Welsh meat can be served to consumers, to avoid destocking Welsh farms but importing lower quality, lower welfare and higher carbon meat.
“We also welcome the fact that the committee has highlighted the criticality of livestock numbers to the sustainability of a thriving red meat industry in Wales and in particular the recommendation to consider schemes that directly support livestock numbers.
“We are in discussion with Welsh Government around the finer details of the report’s recommendations.”
