Commenting on the publication of the NFU’s ‘Welsh Suckler Beef Production’ a HCC spokesperson said:
HCC welcomes NFU’s ‘Welsh Suckler Beef Production’ report. As HCC recently outlined to the Senedd ETRA Food Processing inquiry, declining livestock numbers, suckler cattle in particular, remain a significant concern for the whole industry. Coordinated, long‑term action is urgently needed, including the report’s call for a targeted support programme for the suckler herd. HCC will continue working with partners, including Welsh Government, to advise on this issue and support and deliver on such a programme if developed. We have previously publicly highlighted the wide remit placed on HCC relative to the limited levy funded income from livestock - cattle in particular.
The recommendation for Welsh Government to match‑fund levy payers to support export growth is ultimately a matter for Government. However, HCC is well placed to assist should additional support be provided, and as we develop our next four‑year business plan under Vision 2030, we will focus our constrained budget on the most effective, high‑impact activities. This will mean, as we enter our next four-year business plan, more targeted priorities and a staffing model that delivers strong impact and value for money for levy payers.
