Hybu Cig Cymru (HCC) is calling on sheep farmers across Wales to take part in an exciting three-year phase of Welsh Sheep Genetics, a programme aimed at driving the future of sheep farming by boosting flock performance, efficiency, and environmental sustainability.
From today (1 July), maternal and hill sheep breeders are encouraged to register their interest in joining the initiative, which is designed to support practical, evidence-based breeding decisions that deliver long-term benefits to farming businesses.
The programme, funded by the Welsh Government, builds on the strong foundations established through the Hill Ram Scheme and the first phase of Welsh Sheep Genetics. This second phase offers farmers access to advanced tools and support to help unlock the full potential of their flocks.
Farmers joining the programme will benefit from a package of support, including:
- Fully funded lamb DNA sampling and genotyping in year one for DNA parentage verification
- Funded genetic evaluations to inform breeding decisions
- Funded ultrasonic backfat scanning
- Flock performance benchmarking
- Access to world-leading genetic and genomic technologies
- Guidance on manual and DNA-based pedigree recording
Participants will also receive tailored breeding action plans, while contributing to wider research and innovation across the Welsh sheep sector.
Dr Eleri Thomas, Industry Efficiency and Sustainability Executive at HCC, said: “This programme gives farmers a valuable opportunity to harness the benefits of genetic improvement, supported by practical advice and cutting-edge technologies. The data collected will help strengthen flock performance, improve market opportunities, and support long-term planning for the industry.
“If you are interested in data collection and performance recording and are keen to engage with genetic improvement and evaluations, we would like to hear from you.”
A series of meetings will be held across Wales during July and early August, where farmers can learn more about the programme and how to apply. Applications must be submitted by 14 August.
